A good friend from Brooklyn turned me on to this because he thought it was up my alley. Well, “East Willie B.” is up my alley, on my street, in my hood and in my house.
This web series set in the Bushwick part of Brooklyn is a comedic look at gentrification in the borough. The pilot season ran last year on their website www.eastwillyb.com and got folks like me excited with their cast of crazies trying to hold on to their neighborhood and their history. The show is Puerto Rican centric but spans out from there to include everybody. It reminds me of some of the neighborhoods I grew up in; Brooklyn, Jersey City and Hartford. East Willie B. also serves up the changes bustin’ through the areas I’ve lived in recently; Silverlake, Echo Park and the East Side of Hollywood (it’s not East L.A. no matter how much the hipsters say it is).
Why this isn’t on TV and Honey boo boo is drives me crazy. But times are changing. New TV’s come with youtube built in. Roku boxes are better than cable and cheaper. And there’s a lot worth while entertainment – you just gotta dig.
When it came time for more episodes the creators behind East Willie B. raised 50 grand through kickstarter and we’ll finally get to see the new season and the new crazy in a lil’ bit. If you haven’t seen any episodes start here:
